Joe Montana, Will Smith and Wayne Gretzky at Skyline High School

I covered the nationally televised Oaks Christian-Skyline football game Sept. 18. Quarterback Nick Montana, a Washington recruit, led the Lions to a 28-25 win over the Spartans, but three famous fathers were in attendance. Three players — Trey Smith, Trevor Gretzky and Nick Montana — have star fathers, them being actor Will Smith, hockey great Wayne Gretzky and NFL hall-of-famer Joe Montana. I got a photo of Joe Montana in the stands before the game. In the second half, I paced the sidelines literally within a couple of feet of Will Smith (who had two body guards, of course).

Photo of the day — high school sports

The Skyline High School football team won the 2008 Washington state Class 4A championship in December. As a reporter for the Sammamish Review, I got to cover the team’s undefeated run to state. Along the way, Skyline played the Newport Knights, of Bellevue.

Running back Joey Evans (23) drags a Newport defender into the end zone for a touchdown. Evans rushed 191 times for 885 yards in 2008. Skyline finished 14-0.
