Liberty High School freshman Logan Briggs is fast.

In fact, according to coach Kris Daughters, he’s the fastest on the team.

“I really respect Loagn because of what a team player he is,” Daughters said. “He makes it fun for the other guys.”

Briggs placed second at the KingCo meet in the 200-yard freestyle race (1:48.41) and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (50.23 seconds). Both times were good enough to qualify him for state.

“I knew that (Mercer Island’s) Alexander Hoff … was going to go out fast, so I was hoping for second or third,” Briggs said after the 200-freestyle race. “I got a best time by a second, so that made me happy.”

Here are a couple of shots from last weekend’s KingCo 3A/4A swim meet in Mercer Island, Wash.

An aspect of my my job I like particularly more than the rest is shooting high school sports. I am still refining my style and working on shooting more aggressively to anticipate the action — probably always will be — but I enjoy pretty much everything about being at a game.

Working for papers that cover Issaquah the Sammamish Plateau  is great because most of the teams are at least decent, if not the best around. The Issaquah and Skyline football teams, of course, gave me a treat in the fall with the historic run-up to the state 4A championship battle.

This winter, the Eastlake and Issaquah girls basketball teams are the ones to watch. They are the top two teams in the Class 4A KingCo Crest Division and will both probably make the playoffs. So, anytime they meet, it’s fun to see who will outlast and out-muscle the other’s feisty approach on the court.

The Skyline High School football team won the 2008 Washington state Class 4A championship in December. As a reporter for the Sammamish Review, I got to cover the team’s undefeated run to state. Along the way, Skyline played the Newport Knights, of Bellevue.

Running back Joey Evans (23) drags a Newport defender into the end zone for a touchdown. Evans rushed 191 times for 885 yards in 2008. Skyline finished 14-0.
