Ottawa at Sunset

It’s fun to experiment with styles and filters. I was satisfied with my original exposure and composition for this image — I used a tripod to expose longer and really let the sensor soak in the warm tones of the building at sunset. But I wanted to try something new, so I added some grain to see how retro I could make it.

I don’t shoot with a tripod much, so when I do have it handy, it’s fun to stop and compose a nice shot like this, even if it takes a few more minutes to get home from the grocery store. This is shot from a store parking lot in Ottawa, Kansas. The peach-colored rays of light reaching into the dark blue sky only lasted for a minute or two, so I had to work fast.

Baker University – the first in Kansas

While hanging out in Baldwin City, Kansas for a day in early August, I had a chance to meander through the campus of Baker University. On my little photo tour, I learned that the university was founded in 1858 by Osmon Cleander Baker, a distinguished scholar and bishop of what is now the United Methodist Church. It was also the first university in the state, according to the school’s website.

The Clarice L. Osborne Memorial Chapel was moved stone by stone from the village of Sproxton, England. It serves as the spiritual center of the university. Lady Margaret Thatcher, former British Prime Minister, dedicated the chapel at Baker in 1996, according to the university. Her father had preached in the building.

Located just a block off of the main drag through Ottawa, Kansas, the First Baptist Church building sticks out for its dynamic architecture.

Historic Ottawa buildings

Although Ottawa, Kansas is a small town of only about 12,000 residents, it has its fair share of historic landmarks, like the Franklin County Courthouse and the Baptist church.

According to a couple of local residents, the church underwent a million-dollar renovation but maintains its original stone architecture.

While in Kansas, I visited the Louisburg Cider Mill. There, they bottle exquisitely fresh apple cider and a variety of root beer and cream sodas. They even make cider-flavored cake donuts.

Off the beaten path

The nice thing about staying with locals when you travel is that they show you places you wouldn’t otherwise find while exploring a town. The Second Street Dam is a quiet hang-out spot for Ottawa residents young and old. It’s just off the main drag through Ottawa, a town of about 12,000, but you feel like you’re much farther away from everything.

Halfway through my stay in Ottawa, Kansas, I was able to get out of town and visit the surrounding area. You can drive for miles and miles and see nothing but corn, soy bean and hay fields along the road.

NEW Aug. 1

Bernhard Langer wins the 2010 U.S. Senior Open golf championship at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish. I got to cover the event from numerous angles. Quite fun to shoot and report on the players and the massive volunteer efforts.
